Last week, two of our team joined Northumberland Line colleagues to take part in volunteering at the Woodhorn Museum in Ashington.
The team was supporting a volunteering initiative to re-open a narrow gauge railway. Under the guidance of museum volunteers, Alannah and Rosie rolled up their sleeves to lay ballast, position new sleepers, re-lay old track, and hammer in new railway spikes – quite different from their normal roles in planning.
Alannah said: “It was tough work but rewarding to help a grassroots project who are seeking to provide an affordable tourist attraction for the people of Ashington. With the help of volunteers, they estimate that the track could be running circa two years earlier than originally planned.”
