Matt embarks on Real Estate Management degree apprenticeship

Matt Cooney, Rail and Property Advisor at SLC Property, has recently begun a BSc Apprenticeship in Real Estate Management, marking an exciting new chapter in his professional development.

Matt joined SLC Property nearly three years ago and has worked on projects such as University Station (for West Midlands Combined Authority), and current projects, Package 1 & Package 2 (introducing five new stations for West Midlands Combined Authority) and the Northumberland Line (introducing six new stations for Northumberland County Council).

Matt explains: “Throughout my time at SLC Property, I have gained a wealth of knowledge about the industry.  SLC Property has allowed me opportunities to gain insight into strategy, to build new skills and to implement my skills on projects. These experiences are invaluable, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to do this.”

To further his career, Matt has chosen to pursue a BSc in Real Estate Management through an apprenticeship programme with the University of the Built Environment (formerly the University College of Estate Management, UCEM), specialising in Land and Resources. He will also be working towards achieving chartered status through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) as part of the course.

“I chose the apprenticeship route because it allows me to gain practical experience while continuing to grow academically,” Matt continues. “I receive support from both the university and SLC Property – whether it’s access to additional resources, Q&A sessions, one-on-one mentoring, or simply having colleagues to talk things through with.”

Matt is currently enjoying the course, which has so far covered key topics such as the Built Environment and Sustainability.  He concludes:  “This apprenticeship is helping me further understand client needs and wants and offer alternative ideas to assist the projects I am working on. The combination of hands-on experience and formal education is expanding my perspective and enhancing the value I bring to our work. SLC Property has allowed me the chance to further my career and broaden my experience. It’s a great place to work!”
